Citilink is making transit simpler, smarter, and more affordable with the re-launch of fare capping beginning June 1.
With fare capping, riders can travel throughout the day without worrying about overpaying. When using Tap to Pay, smartcards, or mobile tickets, you’ll never pay more than the cost of a day pass.
No more guessing which fare option is best. No more paying upfront “just in case” you ride enough. The system automatically works for you.
What is Fare Capping?
Fare capping is an easy way to save money on transit. Instead of purchasing a day pass ahead of time, riders simply pay as they ride.
Once your rides reach the cost of a day pass, any additional rides for the rest of the day are included automatically.
That means:
- You always get the best value
- You never pay more than necessary
- The system tracks it automatically for you
How It Works
Using fare capping is simple:
- Use the same payment method each time you ride
- Tap your card, smartcard, or mobile ticket when boarding
- Continue riding normally throughout the day
Once your total fares reach the cost of a day pass, the system automatically caps your fares and covers the rest of your rides for the day.
No extra steps. No special request. No need to purchase a pass ahead of time.
Eligible Payment Methods
Fare capping works with:
- Tap to Pay
- Citilink smartcards
- Mobile tickets through Token Transit
Cash fares are not eligible because the system cannot track multiple cash trips throughout the day.
Why Fare Capping Matters
Traditional transit fare systems often require riders to decide upfront whether they’ll ride enough to justify purchasing a pass.
However, many riders don’t know exactly how many trips they’ll take in a day.
Fare capping removes that stress and uncertainty by making sure riders automatically receive the lowest fare possible, based on how much they ride.
This creates a more flexible and rider-friendly experience for:
- Riders with changing schedules
- Part-time commuters
- Students
- Occasional riders
- Visitors
- Anyone who prefers to pay as they go
A More Equitable Transit Experience
Fare capping also helps make transit more accessible and equitable.
Historically, riders who could afford to purchase day or monthly passes upfront often received the best value, while riders paying one trip at a time could end up spending more overall.
Fare capping helps level the playing field by ensuring riders receive the same value over time without requiring large upfront purchases.
