Help Keep Fort Wayne Connected: Speak Up for Citilink! A Message from Casey Claypool

By September 27, 2024No Comments

Please see below a personal message from Casey Claypool, Citilink’s Marketing and Development Director.

Citilink, Fort Wayne’s public transportation system, is facing a pivotal moment, and we need your help. To sustain the vital services that so many in our community rely on, we have asked City Council to approve our budget, which includes a tax levy increase.

This increase would amount to no more than $12 per year—just $1 a month—for property owners who have not yet met their cap. This small contribution, while it could be negatively impactful for some, can make a world of difference, ensuring that Citilink can continue to connect people to jobs, healthcare, education, and other essential services.

Without this increase, Citilink faces the possibility of cutting 14% of its service. The impact would be devastating, potentially eliminating 300,000 trips annually, 20 jobs, and causing a loss of over $12 million to the local economy. Those who rely on public transit—our neighbors, coworkers, and community members—would face barriers in accessing the resources they need to live and thrive.

Here’s how you can help:

  1. Download the template letter (or write your own message) to City Council:

    TEMPLATE LETTER FOR CITY COUNCIL

  2. Personalize the letter with your name and any thoughts you wish to share.
  3. Find your council representative here: https://www.cityoffortwayne.org/city-council-home.html

Key points you can mention:

  • Citilink connects Greater Fort Wayne, providing reliable transportation to residents who have no other options.
  • The tax levy increase amounts to just $12 per year for property owners, a small investment to keep our city moving forward.
  • Service cuts would affect the entire community, not just transit riders—impacting jobs, healthcare, education, and the economy.

Your voice is powerful. By contacting City Council, you can help protect public transit in Greater Fort Wayne and ensure everyone in our community has access to the transportation they need. It’s a small action that can have a lasting impact.

Thank you for your time and support. Together, we can ensure that Greater Fort Wayne remains a city where everyone can stay connected and thrive.
