FAQ: Citilink is Upgrading Fare Options

Why is Citilink retiring the current paper passes?

We’re transitioning to more reliable, modern fare options that work with our new fareboxes such as mobile tickets, QR-code paper passes (Ticket to Ride and All Day passes only), and smart cards. These options reduce issues at the farebox and give riders more flexibility and security.

Which passes can I exchange?

You may exchange any unused:

  • Ticket to Ride (Single Ride Pass) passes
  • All Day passes
  • 31-Day passes

What can I exchange them for?

  • Ticket to Ride (Single Ride Pass) & All Day Passes:
    → Mobile tickets OR Smart Cards to load passes onto
  • 31-Day Passes:
    → Smart Card OR mobile monthly pass

All exchanges are one-to-one based on fare type.

Can I get a refund instead?

No. Refunds will not be issued. Exchanges are the only option.

How long do I have to exchange my passes?

Now through January 31. From January 31 through March 31, passes will be exchanged on a case by case basis. After March 31, old passes will no longer be accepted for exchange. Please schedule a time to exchange with Tyi’Erra Martin by emailing TOM@fwcitilink.com.

What happens on January 1?

The farebox slot that activates new GFI passes will be covered.
Already-activated passes will continue to work.

What happens after January 31?

GFI fareboxes may be:

  • Removed from buses, or
  • Switched to cash-only mode
    while we prepare for the installation of new Diamond fareboxes for exact cash only for single rides and use our mobile validators already installed for daily and monthly passes.

What are the benefits of mobile tickets or smart cards?

They:

  • Are less expensive than using cash
  • Let you pay as you go and earn All Day and 31-Day passes as you ride
  • Are easier to use
  • Are faster to scan
  • Are replaceable if lost
  • Are more reliable than magnetic stripes
  • Are convenient to reload or manage online

What is fare capping?

Fare capping makes sure you never pay more than the price of a All Day pass or 31-Day pass, even if you pay one ride at a time.

No. Fare capping only works with mobile tickets or smart cards.

Do I have to switch to mobile?

No. Riders may choose QR-code paper passes for Ticket to ride or All Day passes or a Smart Card for All Day or 31-Day passes if they prefer physical fare media.

How do agencies handle exchanges?

Agencies may exchange passes one-to-one. They can receive replacements through the Token Transit Partner Portal or as physical fare media.

You can exchange your passes at Citilink’s Leesburg office at 801 Leesburg Road, Fort Wayne IN, 46808.
