Broken Glass, Unbroken Resolve: A Message to Our Community

By April 15, 2025No Comments

Sometime recently, someone threw a rock through the glass of our new universal shelter on S. Anthony Blvd, outside the League for the Blind and Disabled.

This shelter was designed with care and intention. It’s design will include a high-contrast cane path and has features specifically selected for those with low vision and varying abilities—making public transit safer and more accessible for everyone. We haven’t even had the chance to celebrate its debut. And yet, here we are, sweeping up shattered glass instead of cutting a ribbon.

To whoever did this: We’re not angry. We imagine you might be having a hard time. Maybe you didn’t realize the impact of your actions. Maybe you didn’t think about how a person with low vision might now be at risk of injury because they can’t see the broken panel. Maybe you didn’t know this shelter was built with love for people who often get left out.

We hope things get better for you. We really do. And if you’re struggling, we encourage you to call 2-1-1 for support and resources. There is help, and you deserve it.

To our community: We’re disappointed, yes—but not defeated. In a time when every dollar counts, it’s especially painful to divert resources to repair something so new. But we’re committed to accessibility, and we’ll be working quickly to make this shelter whole again.

Please extend grace. We’ll keep showing up with hope and hard work—and we invite you to do the same.

With resolve,

Casey Claypool
